Is anyone using google bulldoze to share/collaborate with indesign files? Currently all our indesign files reside on a server and we work direct off of the server. At that place is a company plan to get rid of the servers and supercede them with the Google bulldoze.

      Hi,

Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service. It allows users to store documents in the cloud, share files, and edit documents with collaborators.Yes information technology is very familiar for sharing Adobe InDesign files but yous need a good system. If your visitor is bigger one you need to make great file network (lot of folders) in order to better manage files. Many companies are using this sharing service and many of them are taking bully success.

      Regards!

      Hi Artwork Abode,
Many thanks for your response. I have a few more questions.
Folder organization aside, are you editing/designing in the indesign document from within the google drive on the web browser? What are you doing well-nigh linked images, are they residing on the google bulldoze too forth side the indesign document?

The last I knew, you can't edit or work non–Google Drive documents via browser.

I'm thinking you'd accept to download to your figurer, work on information technology, then identify back on Google Bulldoze when done. In any event, I've always found it dangerous to work on a live certificate on the server or remotely. I think it'south best to work on your local machine and then back it up to the server/remote site when you are washed.

I know your questions about the art were directed to Artwork Home, simply I would call up the best style to do your art is an art folder for each job. For instance, in my work flow, I have a main binder for each specific task. In that binder is my pages folder, fonts binder, art folder, etc.

Note: Personally, if my visitor ever thought of using Google Drive instead of our server, I'd be the showtime to object. I wouldn't trust anything in the cloud with our livelihood. If Google has an outage for a twenty-four hour period or two (or even hours), nosotros'd exist screwed.

Thankfully–we accept a server, and if that always craps the bed, nosotros have twice-daily dorsum-ups to external drives, as well every bit archives going back several years.

I'm curious as to why your company has such faith in getting rid of their servers and using Google Drive.

      Dear Josephine,

Only think most Google Drive equally another PC.I mean, Google Drive is very simple.Just your another hard drive on the cyberspace. You must upload files, and when you lot want to reedit some file you must upload information technology again.Dwayne'southward personal oppinion is not so skilful, you don't desire to trust largest net visitor in the earth?Google have a couple of servers in whole world. They are never downwards, that is not possibile.
If you take more questions please ask me?

      Regards,
      Artwork Abode

If yous want to trust information technology, Artwork Abode, be my guest. I encounter nothing incorrect using something like that to transfer files back and along, but I would not exist comfy with it being my main server.
And it'south ever possible for it to go down. Maybe not for a long catamenia of time, but it'south possible. And there have been several GMail outages in the past.
Just so again, it's but my personal opinion.

I work for a commercial printer. Our company SOP is to work on the files from the network server location. All workstations have UPS battery backups, likewise every bit, all the servers and network switches. In the consequence of a catastrophic loss of power we accept more than plenty time to safely salve and shutdown. Twenty years ago I was the simply prepress operator merely now we take ten across all shifts.

1 affair to be said for Google Bulldoze is that the servers are replicated in multiple locations and I don't think your files would be lost even if a location went down. I would be more concerned about several people downloading the same file and working on it and that the last 1 to upload may non have changes made by someone else. On our arrangement if i is working on a file a lock file is created preventing someone else working on information technology until the file is closed.

I have hit a snag with Google Drive and InDesign. I can create and save a file, simply when I try to relieve the changes made in the file, it tells me information technology cannot write to the file considering it is in use. In the end, I merely save it with a number appended to the file proper noun. It is not my favorite, but I'grand guessing that information technology is something to practice with InDesign wanting sectional admission and Google Drive trying to replicate the file everywhere.

Interesting. I did a test a while ago with a colleague to run across if we could share a Google Bulldoze folder and put an InDesign file and InCopy files in in that location, and it worked dandy.

It does crave that both (all) users install the Google Drive *app* on their desktop computers. If you get to your Google Bulldoze home screen, at the bottom left yous'll see link to download the app. Once installed, it creates a folder on your difficult drive called Google Bulldoze. It'south at the top level of your user business relationship's collection of folders. (IOW, same level equally Documents or Desktop, on a Mac.)

And so it works kinda similar Dropbox. The files on your Google Drive are synced to your hard drive. (This may exist an optional setting, don't remember. Only mine are.)

You lot tin can relieve a folder w/an InDesign file into your local Google Drive binder, and so right-click and Share it with other Google Bulldoze users. They will need to sync it to their Google Drive besides, and they edit it on their local calculator, in the Google Bulldoze folder. There is no manual uploading or downloading involved.

I use DropBox and have a like problem to Warren: sometimes I endeavour to save a file and go told it is in use. This is the problem with anything that syncs – it's like shooting fish in a barrel to conflict with the syncing activity.
